STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM
Dear Niños del Sol Supporting Community,
I’m writing to ask you to support a child in our community who has a fervent desire to attend Ninos del Sol Eco School but whose family does not have the financial means. We know you share our belief - every child deserves a quality education - an education that sets them up for success for the rest of their lives.
Ninos del Sol Eco School is a small, internationally accredited, primary school, recognized by CAI and the Ministerio de Salud located in Playa Ocotal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
We are passionate about making a positive impact on our local community, but we need your help! Our goal is to raise $2,100 each month to sponsor seven students, with every dollar going towards their education. The students are selected for their demonstrated love of the environment, financial need, and academic desire. A donation from you will bring us one step closer to our goal.
You might wonder why families wish to send their children to Ninos del Sol Eco School when the public educational system is free. Well, the truth is there are many reasons.
Our parents tell us they continue to send their children to Ninos del Sol because of our philosophy and educational approach, our experienced teachers, and our low pupil to teacher ratio. We teach valuable skills and lessons that the children will benefit from for years to come. And when it’s time to move on, our students are sad to leave. Read the reviews on our Facebook page – students even want to come to school on weekends!
We provide a nurturing and prepared learning environment that includes integrated learning, mixed-grade classes, and continuity. Integrated learning is a big focus at our school. Science, math, social studies and language are often integrated into our ECO curriculum. The integrated curriculum of all subjects makes learning more engaging and instills a passion to learn more.
Mixed-age classrooms better promote interaction and problem-solving skills. Students can work with and learn from older peers, who teach, mentor and model behavior to them.
It has been proven that younger children thrive on continuity and need to bond with their teachers. Our multi-grade classrooms do that well. Ninos del Sol Eco School is a warm, vibrant, family-style environment where each child follows their passions and interests through project-based learning.
Ninos del Sol Eco School has been chosen as a finalist in the Grades of Green Spring 2018 Water Challenge, a global competition in which 136 student leaders at 40 schools from eight countries design new ways to lead water conservation and water quality efforts. (Our school was highlighted in The Tico Times. You can read about our efforts at: http://www.ticotimes.net/2018/04/23/guanacaste-school-selected-as-finalist-in-global-water-competition).
While academics are important, Ninos del Sol aims to educate the whole child which includes their behavior and values. For example, students are not only taught to take care of themselves and others, but they learn about and care for their environment as well. They recently participated in the Bandera Azul Ecologica (Blue Ecologic Flag), a prevention program to stop pollution and to safeguard public health. In addition, our students are involved in tree planting, recycling initiatives, planting gardens and composting projects.
Our volunteer Parent Council meet regularly and work to develop programs with the best interests of the child in mind. We welcome and encourage students with disabilities and just recently initiated a pilot program for special needs students.
Our after-school events include: Lego Robotics on Thursdays and Saturdays; Kidding Around Yoga and Break Dance every Monday; Friday Night Movie Night; and, Saturday Morning Play Group.
We host several events throughout the year such as POW Night, a presentation of music and drama by our students and Solstice Spirit Week with themed days and special activities. These activities are an opportunity to have fun while getting to know other families in our school community.
While the Costa Rican public educational system is free, it does not offer a stabilized learning environment. In many cases, children must wait for one to two weeks for a substitute teacher, so they do not attend school. Students thrive in an environment that is orderly and has consistent instructional hours. The public school educational system does not allow parents to volunteer at the school if a teacher is not present.
The Ministerio de Educacion Publica does not allow extra-curricular activities. It is totally prohibited. Schools must comply with the schedule established by the Ministerio de Educacion Publica and all activities must be done within the institution.
The ratio of teacher to students in the public-school system is usually between 25-35 students per teacher whereas our teacher to student ratio is five students per teacher. Studies have proven that smaller class sizes have a significant and positive long-term effect on student achievement and other important outcomes.
The public school, which is in a rural tourist area, is the only public school in the area; however, they do not participate in community activities because of the lack of support and interest. Ninos del Sol has participated in three beach clean-ups and has raised the awareness of a local bee farm and animal sanctuary by presenting poster projects to the community.
English is the first language for 90% of our students. They receive instruction only in Spanish from our ECO educator whose mother tongue is Spanish as well as a formal Spanish course from our local Costa Rican teacher. Enrolling local students will provide our current students an opportunity to be immersed in English while also offering the international population of Ninos del Sol a chance to practice Spanish.
Ninos del Sol Eco School students are developing critical problem-solving skills and will be the environmental leaders of tomorrow. I believe our students represent the essence of our community and they will give back in time because they know others paid it forward – because people like you supported them.
We welcome you to visit us! A visit to our school is living proof that your hard-earned money will be invested where it counts – towards a quality education for a child in need. Seeing is believing!
I hope you know how much your financial support would mean to a child. Every donation, no matter how large or small will help! Your generosity will have an immediate life-changing impact.
Please find enclosed a Sponsorship form for your consideration. I will contact you soon to speak further about your involvement.
I truly appreciate your support in enriching the education of children in our community.
